The study of the New Gourna Village
The study of New Gourna Village originated from Plato‘s “The cave metaphor”. On one hand, New Gourna Village has its specific historical and political reasons. The old village built on the site of the Tomb of the Nobles, part of the ancient cemetery of Thebes (now Luxor, Egypt), where people live by looting. The local government forcibly expelled them from their original residence and regulated them. On the other hand, Hassan Fathy incorporated local architectural elements to build it into a micro-social system that can operate independently. From the division of population to the planning of space, New Gourna Village was built into a perfect utopian architectural space. According to different exhibition venues, the project tries to form a rhythmic echo with the space in the form of architectural sculpture and on-site installation, and invites the audience to walk in and participate in it.
