The Albino
As Susan Sontag mentioned in her book Illness as Metaphor, "For the expansion of the illness's category, usually we rely on two hypotheses: 1. Any deviation from societal norms can be considered a illness; 2. Each illness can be viewed morally and psychologically." Illness is gradually regarded as an effective way of self-introspection, with excessive moral and psychological judgments. It blames all responsibility on the patient, and reinforces their pre-existing fatalism inevitably.
In The Albino, the selected albino performer rigorously presents twelve body movements of anatomy illustrations from Andreas Vesalius's book On the Fabric of the Human Body, in a dispassionate, distant and ritual way. He resembles a live Greek marble sculpture with his muscular build and incomparably white skin, full of nature, poetic and classical characteristics. Despite his beauty, his resemblance to the Greek ideal, the albino’s other traits, such as photophobia, lacrimation and nystagmus, bring the audience’s attention back to the reality.
